Singing in a monotone, west sounds ghostly as he recounts his romantic failures in brutal detail. But then humanity, in the form of Japanese taiko drums, arrives to whip up a dancesong about misery. It's easily the most interesting musical experiment this year, and, if you grant its premise, the best.

【issues】Top 10 Green Stories
When the presidential campaign began, greens might have thought they'd win either way: Obama and John McCain both supported cation on climate change. But as the campaign wore on, McCain re-entered Republican orthodoxy, declaring his enthusiasm for fossil fuels, while Obama built a program around alternative-energy investment to create green jobs.
2. Congress Passes Renewable-Energy Credits
The tax credits that help build the solar and wind industries in the U.S. were set to expire by the end of 2008, which would have gutted the renewable-energy industry. Partisan gridlock prevented them from being passed until they were tacked onto October's bailout bill.
3. Offshore-Drilling Debate
The chant reverberated from Anchorage to Miami: "Drill, baby, drill." Despite analyses that offshore drilling would have little effect on the price if gas, the slogan caught fire. For now, coastal waters are safe. But the debate isn't over.
4.Failure of Warner-Lieberman
With President Bush firmly opposed, the first national carbon cap-and trade legislation to reach a full vote in the Senate had no chance. As gas prices soared, the bill fell a dozen votes short of the 60 needed to beat a filibuster.
5. New Rules: EPA Puts a Freeze on Coal Plants
Dirty, cheap coal generates 49% of the electricity in the U.S. and 30% of the country's carbon emissions. When an obscure board at the Environmental Protection Agency made it virtually impossible for the agency to certify new coal plants, it halted more than 100 currently planned.
6. Ethanol Bubble Bursts
The only alternative energy to achieve scale in the U.S. has been corn ethanol, now a $32 billion industry. But scientific studies undercut ethanol's green credentials, while the biofuel boom was blamed for record food prices--killing the dream that cornfields would replace oil fields.
7. Polar Bear Listed
Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced that the polar bear would be listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, the first animal added as a result of global warming, but emphasized that the listing would in no way be used to force reductions in U.S. carbon emissions.
8. Indonesia Warms to Less Deforestation
Currently, there's no program in which developing countries can trade a promise not to clear their forests for cash, like a reverse carbon credit. But in November, Indonesia took the first step in setting up a system that would enable Americans to pay it yo preserve its rain forest.
9. First Co2 Auction
Northeastern utilities bid $38.5 million for the right to emit 12.5 million tons of co2.
10. Oxford English Dictionary Word of the Year: Hypermiling
Definition: driving to get extreme mileage out of your gas.

【class work】Unit 2 academic honesty questions
What are some of the different reasons students give?
Do you know people who cheated in high school or college?
Answer:
The most important reason flash into my mind is “no time to study”!
Generally, lots of students have no money. But everything needs money! For example, remedial courses, the main pay, and help their parents with the money. The students who need money have to take a part-time job, or “several” part-time jobs.
The students spend their time to take part-time job, but no time to study. What can they do in exam? Generally, cheat I think.
Sorry, I have no idea for the people who created in high school or college….
2.In the US if you were caught plagiarizing assignments you would immediately be given a failing grade. You could also be immediately expelled from the university for “academic dishonesty”. Since the reason you were expelled would be written on your transcripts, every other university you applied to would know you once got caught cheating. What types of punishment are generally given for cheating on exams or class work in Taiwan? Do you think these punishments are a sufficient deterrent to cheating? What do you think the punishment should be?
Answer:
As a matter of fact, I do not know what types of punishment are generally given for cheating on exams or class work in Taiwan. But I do not those punishments are a sufficient deterrent to cheating. According to many reports shows that people would always give it a try! Try to get high grads, even cheating.
3.You will have to think creatively for your answer here: Even with the threat of severe punishment, the readings above indicate that cheating is still a problem. One reason is because students naturally assume they will get away with it and won’t get caught. Therefore, severe consequences probably won’t be enough, by themselves, to stop students from cheating (if you don’t think you will get caught, it’s easy to ignore the possible consequences). What can be done? What real solutions should be tried? Are teachers and students in perpetual race to see who can get trickier? What other solutions can be tried to stop cheating? Be specific with your suggestions.
Answer:
Use camera to record every thing, subject a person to a search, and arrange at least four people to invigilator. These are the most normal way, but it is quite useful!

【class work】Second Life®
Create an Avatar
The Second Life world is a place dedicated to your creativity.
After all, an avatar is your persona in the virtual world. The picture below shows how easy it is to create your avatar. Despite offering almost infinite possibilities, the tool to personalize your avatar is very simple to use and allows you to change anything you like, from the tip of your nose to the tint of your skin. Don't worry if it's not perfect at first, you can change your look at any time.
Explore
When a place is as big as the Second Life world and has so many things to do, the first question people ask is, "Where do I start?".
We recommend three tools to help you start exploring. As an example, let's pretend you're looking for a good place to party and meet people.
- The Map. Imagine you want to find people socializing. View upcoming events' information on the web map by clicking the the green dots being shown.
- The Search Menu. Now you'd like to learn more about a particular event you saw on the web map. Search for it, and read its description. It sounds great, and you teleport there.
- Other People. Once you arrive, right-click on anybody's avatar and choose "View Profile" to learn about them.
Have Fun
In the Second Life world, there's something new around every corner.
The world is filled with hundreds of games, from multi-player RPG's to puzzles and grid-wide contests. There are also dance clubs, shopping malls, space stations, vampire castles and movie theatres.
To find something to do at any time of the day or night, simply open the Search menu and click on Events. You'll see a listing of Discussions, Sports, Commercial, Entertainment, Games, Pagaents, Education, Arts and Culture and Charity/Support Groups.
Regardless of your mood, there's always something to do... ( fromhttp://secondlife.com/ )
Amazing! Isn't it?
We could do every we really want in this on-line game. After I saw the introduce to the game, I really want to join it. Unfortunately, Kai has no credit card, couldn't apply account... .

【issues 】Us Against The World
(Rami Yacoub/ Arnthor Birgisson/ Savan Kotecha)
You and I, we’ve been at it so long
I still got the strongest fire
You and I, we still know how to talk know how to walk that wire
Sometimes I feel like the world is against me
The sound of your voice baby that’s what saves me
When we’re together I feel so invincible
Chorus
‘Cause it’s us against the world
You and me against them all
If you’re listening to these words
Know that we are standing tall
I don’t ever see the day that I won’t catch you when you fall
‘Cause it’s us against the world tonight
There’ll be days we’ll be on different sides
But that doesn’t last too long
We find ways to get it on track
We know how to turn back on
Sometimes I feel I can’t keep it together
then you hold me close and you make it better
When I’m with you I can feel so unbreakable
Chorus
We’re not gonna break ‘cause we both still believe
We know what we’ve got and we’ve got
what we need alright We’re doing something right
Chorus x2

westlife
(Steve Mac/Wayne Hector)
There’s a laugh in my eyes
There’s a waltz in my walk
And it’s been such a long time
Since there was hope in my talk
If you never knew what it is that’s new…
it’s you
‘Cause when your hands are in mine
You set a fire that everyone can see
And it’s burning away
Every bad memory
To tell you the truth
If it’s something new… baby it’s you
Chorus
It’s you in the morning
It’s you in the night
A beautiful angel came down to light up my life
The world’s a different place
Where nothing’s too hard to say
And nothing’s too hard to do
Never too much to go through
To tell you the truth
Everything that’s new….
Baby It’s you
Chorus
So if I get to grow old
With many years behind me
There’s only one thing I want
One thing I need beside me
For all that you are
For everything you do
For all that you’ve done
Just for showing me the truth
It’s youIt’s you
Baby it’s you

【issues 】Amazing
(Kotecha/ Lundin/ Pilot/ Schulze)
You’re like a storm against the window
Follow me round just like a shadow
I’ll swim a never-ending ocean
Until you bring back your devotion
It’s like I live a thousand lifetimes
Still looking for the one that feels right
See moving on just isn’t working
You lit the fire that I burn in
Chorus
And all I’ve been doing is protecting
A lie for the sake of my pride
While all the others had me thinking
We could be more than just amazing
I guess I’m holding on to my faith
A silent hope I’m heading your way
And crawling over is so tempting
We could be more than just amazing
Chorus
I couldn’t see it
I must have believed a lie
If I admit it Would you let me make it right
Amazing
We could be more than just
We could be more than just
Chorus
And all I’ve been doing is protecting
A lie for the sake of my pride
While all the others had me thinking
Straight to the point of what I’m feeling
We could be more than just amazing

(Foster/Bublé/Chang)
Another summer day has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome, I wanna go home
Maybe surrounded by a million people I
Still feel all alone, I just wanna go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I’ve been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two, “’I’m fine baby how are you?”
Well, I would send them but I know that it’s just not enough
My words were cold and flat and you deserve more than that
Another airplane, another sunny place I’m lucky I know
but I wanna go home, I’ve got to go home
Chorus
Let me go home
I’m just too far from where you are
I gotta come home
Let me go home
I’ve had my run, baby I’m done
I wanna come home
And I feel just like I’m living someone else’s life
It’s like I just stepped outside when everything was going right
And I know just why you could not come along with me
‘Cause this was not your dream, but you always believed in me
Another winter day has come and gone away
In neither Paris nor Rome and I wanna go home
I miss you, you know
Chorus
Let me go home
I‘ve had my run
Baby I’m done
I wanna go home
Let me go home
It’ll all be alright
I’ll be home tonight
I’m coming back home
